I am surprised on how decent the quality of the meals are for their price here, that’s very rare in Auckland. We came in for lunch and ordered the crispy chicken and lemongrass pork noodle soup. Both were delicious and were served to us quickly. I would come back to try out the other dishes too. I do have to say that the ginger sauce on the side with the rice is a tad salty but overall I’d recommend this place for budget eats in Newmarket out of all places.

It is my go-to restaurant when I feel like some Cantonese food. Their lunch menu is so affordable and good. Their staff can be blunt but they are all about efficiency and getting the job done. My favorite has to be their black bean beef on rice ($10.5) and hotpot. So worth it!

Second visit today, absolute fan of their prices and offerings. Highly recommend Minced pork with eggplant on rice (ask for chilli sauce on side) and thick noodles in spicy sauce - these 2 are from their budget lunch menu. Today I ordered baked chicken in Portuguese sauce on rice, was with a HK native who helped pick something uniquely local. Portuguese sauce is a bit like curry sauce and with the baked cheese and juicy chicken went surprisingly well with rice. Highly recommend (#50).

Sunrise Hongkong Cafe is a lunchtime legend! If you're a fan of Hong Kong comfort food, this spot is a must. Their crispy chicken is next-level—golden, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. And don’t even get me started on the Hainan chicken… tender, flavorful, and served with fragrant rice that hits all the right notes. Portions are generous, prices are super budget-friendly, and the flavors? Superb!! Fast service, cozy vibes, and food that makes your soul happy. This place has officially earned a permanent spot in my lunch rotation!

This is something I heard from a Chinese friend of mine — the reason this place can offer meals at such low prices is because the owner already owns the building, so there’s no rent to pay. Instead of adding extra costs, they’ve chosen to keep the prices down so that people in the local Chinese community don’t have to worry about affording a good meal. As you can see inside, Chinese is the language you mostly hear, and most of the customers are Chinese. But even if you’re not, you’re welcomed with a genuine smile and can still enjoy your meal comfortably. It’s a restaurant full of kindness and heart. Every dish seems to carry that warmth — it’s the kind of food that makes you feel grateful as you eat, not just because it’s delicious, but because it’s made with care. I don’t come here simply because it’s affordable, but because I want to feel that warmth again. There’s no other place quite like it. Thank you for filling both my stomach and my heart. A full belly really does make it easier to be kind to others.

Came here for their $7 deals before 7pm – seriously, at that price, what’s there to complain about?! The portions are generous, food tastes authentic, and the staff are quick and friendly. Perfect spot for a cheap, no-fuss Hong Kong-style meal. Will be back!

This will be my next go to for sweet and sour fish, chicken and cashew stir fry and that prawn dish. It's my first time trying it out, first lesson with chop sticks. I had beautiful company, waitress was lovely, we chose to sit near the window on a big round table, able to fit 10 of us. I had one of the most (if not the most) beautiful time of my life. Thank you to all the staff that worked last night from 6pm onwards
